Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist Church

Who We Are

We believe that religion should be more than a narrow statement of faith; that it should have room for deep questions that might have more than one answer; and that, the mystery of creation can be acknowledged without having to be named. Some of us understand God in very personal ways, as the source of love or hopefulness, or as the creative force in our universe. Others find that the notion of a god has little meaning for them.We seek to act as a moral force in the world and believe that ethical living is the supreme witness of religion. The here-and-now and the effects our actions will have on future generations deeply concern us.

Principles and Purpose

Unitarian Universalists are guided by Seven Principles:
1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person.
2. Justice, equality and compassion in human relationships.
3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregation.
4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
5. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and society at large.
6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all.
7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
